The First State, ranks forty-five out of fifty in terms of population. Next to the District of Columbia, it is the smallest state in the Mid-atlantic Region, with a school-age population of about 112,000 students. It has 197 schools and 31 districts.
Delaware's three largest districts (about 40 percent of the state's students) are Brandywine, Red Clay, and Christina, all of which serve the city of Wilmington and are confronted with most of the problems of urban education. Delaware is one of the nation's least rural states; yet given its small population, one-fifth of its school children attend rural schools.
